A crane operator was injured, and a ship was damaged after a crane malfunctioned during cargo operations at Odisha’s Paradip port on October 8, 2024.



The incident occurred at the Mechanized Bulk Cargo (MPB) berth while limestone was being unloaded from the bulk carrier, MV Amnsi Maximus.



Per the reports, the crane, owned by Bothra Shipping Corporation was in the middle of transferring the cargo when the boom suddenly broke.



The heavy metal boom crashed onto the vessel, causing damage to both the ship and the crane.  The crane’s machinery, including its lifting cylinder, was also reported to have sustained major damage.



At the time of the accident, the crane operator who was controlling the equipment was injured.



While the exact nature and extent of his injuries are not yet officially confirmed, local sources say he received immediate medical treatment.



Port authorities and the Bothra Shipping Corporation are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident.



The accident has raised concerns about the crane’s operational safety, mainly regarding the condition of its lifting mechanism.
