On December 19, during a security operation at Foynes, Ireland, a joint team of Customs and Guards Security officials discovered at least 300 kilograms of high-grade ***e aboard the Bulgarian bulk carrier VERILA.

It is reported that the search went on in the hopes of discovering more drugs, totalling about 500 kg. The ***e was said to be thrown overboard in a predefined location since it was packaged in a buoyant bale equipped with a GPS beacon.

The vessel left Montreal on December 9 and arrived in Canada, where she carried grain after arriving there in early November from Brazil. The crew and ship are being held while the investigation is ongoing; there has been no update on any potential crew involvement.
