Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, announced that the EU has committed 50 million euros ($55 million) to repair and upgrade Ukraine’s port infrastructure, which Russian attacks have harmed.
The funding goal is to hasten the ports of Ukraine’s return to export levels before the conflict.
Praising the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative that supplies grain to Africa and the Middle East, Von der Leyen emphasised Ukraine’s crucial role in addressing global food insecurity.
She expressed gratitude to Ukraine for reopening the Black Sea humanitarian corridor after Russia withdrew from a July grain agreement.
Despite the ongoing aggression, Ukraine has continued to contribute to the world’s agricultural markets.
From March 2022 to November 2023, over 60 million tonnes of grain, oilseeds, and related products will be exported because of the EU’s established solidarity lanes, which ease the transit of Ukrainian food products.
Von der Leyen wrote the letter to President Volodymyr Zelensky in honour of the Kyiv International Summit on Food Security.
