The Australian government described a cybersecurity situation that has caused ports operator DP World Australia to cease operations at ports in six states since Friday as “serious and ongoing” on Sunday.

DP World Australia, which oversees roughly half of the products that enter and exit the nation, said it was investigating any data breaches and testing systems critical to the return of routine operations and frequent freight movement.

Since Friday, activities at container terminals based in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Fremantle, Western Australia, have been paused due to the breach.

The cyber issue at DP World is severe and ongoing, said Clare O’Neil, Minister of Home Affairs, on X.

A DP World representative did not respond quickly to a Reuters inquiry on when normal activities would resume. The company, which is a subsidiary of Dubai’s DP World, constitutes one of just a few stevedore industry operators in the country. Late Saturday, Darren Goldie, the National Cyber Security Coordinator hired this year in response to multiple significant data breaches, stated that the “interruption” was probably to go on for days and would impact the movement of merchandise into and out of the country.

DP World employs over 7,000 people in the Asia-Pacific area and operates ports and terminals across 18 locations.
