After nine months of detention in Indonesia, Indian crew members of the MV Aashi have returned home.

The government of Indonesia freed three crew members of the ship after they were taken into custody in February following their vessel running aground.

The Indian Embassy in Indonesia thanked the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their assistance in making this release possible.

“Good work @IndianEmbJkt,” said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, praising the Indian embassy for the crew members’ triumphant return.

On February 10, from Dubai to Indonesia, the 5000-dwt deadweight tonnage MV Aashi ran into bad weather.

When the ship started to take on water, the crew requested permission to anchor close to the Nias Islands, and they then evacuated. Indonesian authorities quickly cleaned up the asphalt spill.

The ship ultimately tilted and submerged by about 80% despite efforts to salvage it.

Seventeen members returned home by February 24th, but Chief Officer Siyab Salam, Chief Engineer Sanjay Kumar Pandey and Captain Sanjeev Kumar stayed behind to conduct additional research.

These three crew members’ passports were seized by the officials.

The detained members were absolved of liability for the ship’s grounding and any environmental damage resulting from the incident, as the investigation uncovered multiple deficiencies in the ship’s condition and unseaworthiness.
