ITF or the International Transport Workers’ Federation has been declared an ‘undesirable organisation’, by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation who said that ITF’s activities are a threat to the consitutional order of the country.

ITF dismissed this by saying it is is a democratic body that works for the protection and enhancement of the workers’ lives worldwide. It has offices in key cities across the world. ITF emphasised its mission to speak for the rights of transportation workers of Russia and others at a global level.

The ITF expressed concern about the impact of this decision on the 1.5 million transportation workers in Russia who are currently with ITF. The repercussions would be severe for around 20,000 Russian seafarers onboard ships that are safeguarded by ITF-certified collective agreements.

ITF has supported Russian seafarers and many benefit from the protection guaranteed under its agreements. Many have received help from ITF to recover their owed wages and ITF is also involved in the repatriation of abandoned seafarers.

Since Jan 2022, 11,405 Russian seafarers have sailed on ships inspected by ITF inspectors who recovered around US $4 million in owed wages on those ships. ITF treats the seafarers of Russia same as seafarers from any other country, without any discrimination, claimed ITF.

The ITF reiterated its call for peace and end to the Russia’s unlawful operations in Ukraine. ITF said that throughout this conflict, it has stood with all the workers. Its solidarity fund for Ukrainian transportation workers and their families has been used mainly for humanitarian purposes. Funds have also been granted to inependednt affiliated unions and maritime charities to broaden their scope of assistance in difficult times.

ITF declared that it stands with the people of Ukraine and Russia and those of the neighbouring nations, calling out for upholding human rights and international regulations.
