A Greek Prosecutor brought criminal charges against the captain of a ferry and 3 crew members over the death of a passenger who was late and whom a crew member pushed into the sea as he struggled to board the departing vessel in Port of Piraeus, Greece.

A crew member was charged with homicide with possible intent and the other 2 with complicity, while the captain was charged with severe breaches of shipping laws.

Greece’s minister for merchant marine, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, expressed “shock, horror and sorrow” at the incident, identifying the person as Andonis Kargiotis, aged 36.

The 36-year-old fell and died after being pulled down by the propellors of the vessel, The Sun reported.

A video circulating on social media showed the person running to the departing ferry called Blue Horizon and stepping on its ramp.

It can be seen that 2 crew members pushed him back to prevent him from boarding. He tried again, but a tussle with one crew member led him to slip into the narrow gap between the ramp and the quay.

His lifeless body floated in the water as the propellors started. Officials stated that the individual’s body was found long after the ferry had left for Crete, leaving the man helpless in the water.

The captain and the crew of Blue Horizon were arrested after the ferry was ordered to return to the port.

Per the Coast Guard, the man was unconscious and taken to the General State Hospital of Nikaia, where an autopsy revealed drowning as the cause of his tragic death.

The video is being widely shared and has angered many across the world, including the maritime nation of Greece. People were shocked at the brutality and inhumane behaviour of the crew, who not only pushed the man to his death but continued on their voyage without even offering a helping hand to the dying man.

“Unbelievable! What animals, what monsters does this society give birth to? I wish the worst in prison for them,” one viewer said.
