Authorities in Greece are investigating after a cargo ship and a containership were involved in a collision in the Ionian Sea. The vessels suffered minor damages, but the authorities are looking into the reasons for the fire onboard the ship Libertas H registered in Malta.

The ships were sailing in the busy waterway on the western side of Greece, 4 miles from Kefalonia Island. Per the Coast Guard, a fresh breeze blew with wind speeds of about 20 knots.

Libertas H was headed to Durres Port, Alabina, from Piraeus in Greece. The 416 ft long and 8700 DWT vessel, managed by Reederei Hinsch, was loaded with containers. It was constructed in 2007 and had an 11-member crew.

The other ship was the Sea Leader, a 6366 DWT general cargo vessel sailing to Aliaga in Turkey from Italy. The 12-member crew vessel was carrying unidentified cargo.

The collision occurred on the morning of 6th September. The local fire department chief told Greek radio Skai that they came to know about a small fire on Libertas H, but the crew extinguished it, though the fire department and the Coast Guard sent a fleet of tugs to the site of the accident.

The Coast Guard ordered the ship to stop at the Argostoli Port, Kefalonia. Per reports, Sea Leader anchored in the bay, and Libertas H moored. The vessels will be inspected, and their respective captains will be interrogated to determine the conditions in which the collision occurred and how the fire started.
