The Coast Guard Station based on Dinagat Islands (CGS Dinagat) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) based in Northeastern Mindanao (NEM) rescued on 12 February, a distressed cargo ship in the sea of Hibusong Island in the province of Dinagat Islands.

In a statement on 13 Feb, the PCG-NEM said that it first got a distress call from the vessel dubbed MTKR Petro Cara on Sunday morning.

The master of the vessel mentioned that they faced an unexpected main engine glitch on Saturday when in the vicinity of Hibusong Island, per PCG-NEM.

It further mentioned that the master had decided to drop the anchor.  However, the vessel continued drifting approximately six miles to the northeast off the Hibusong Island coast.

The CGS Dinagat coordinated with the tugging boat of the National Power Corp. for the towing and rescue of the distressed vessel.

On Sunday afternoon, the CGS personnel reportedly towed the distressed vessel anchored in Agusan del Sur at the Loreto anchorage area.

Following the towing mission, the PCG personnel boarded the vessel to check the crew personnel’s condition and loaded cargoes, and documents to ascertain seaworthiness and safety, per PCG-NEM.

It further advised the distressed vessel’s master to file a marine protest and acquire a special permit for navigating from the Maritime Industry Authority before departing for the next journey.
