Three vessels that were due for recycling at the ship-breaking yard in Gujarat’s Alang have reportedly been detained by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Customs department. This is due to an issue of forged documents, sources mentioned on Monday.

MV Coral and MV Sea Golden along with MV Harriet were detained at anchorage in Bhavnagar. While Coral and Sea Golden arrived on 5 December, Harriet reached on 9 December.

DRI officials did not elaborate on the type of UN sanctions though the customs officials reported that the IMO numbers of the two vessels had been forged. It became evident during compulsory checks carried out by the same authorities.

The Ship Recycling Industries Association or the SRIA mentioned that it is hard to examine whether the papers of a vessel that has come for recycling have been forged or not.

It is similar to purchasing a second-hand vehicle. It is quite difficult to find out if the papers have been forged. It may pop up when authorities conduct compulsory checks and examine documents when the vessel comes for breaking. Any ship recycler who is already aware that the papers are forged is going to but the vessel having forged documentation. This is what Haresh Parmar, a recycler of ships and SRIA joint secretary had to say.
