Welcome aboard the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA). SMA's history began in 1957 when the Singapore Polytechnic took over the responsibility of navigation classes from the Sailor's Institution. SMA celebrates 50 years of Maritime Education and Training on 19 Oct 2007 with the launch of SatCom@SMA - a maritime satellite communications centre in partnership with SingTel.
You will discover that we have three distinct areas of operation: Marine Engineering, Nautical Studies and Shipping Management. As the country's main maritime training institution, SMA offers a full range of Maritime Diplomas, Specialist Diplomas as well as Certificate of Competency Courses and Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Courses. Our courses are infused with technological perspectives that increase their relevance in today's world.
Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering Diploma graduates of SMA can pursue a Bachelor in Maritime Operations (BMO) degree programme being conducted in conjunction with the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz in the Netherlands.  In addition, Marine Engineering graduates can progress to the BEng (Hons) degree in Naval Architecture (with specializations in Marine Engineering and Offshore Engineering) offered by Newcastle University (UK) to be conducted in Singapore Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic campuses under the recently announced Polytechnic-Foreign Specialised Institution (FSI) programme.
Our resources range from state-of-the-art Simulators in Navigation, Communication, Cargo-handling and Ship's Engine to sophisticated Electrical, Electronics and IT-based Shipping Commerce & Trading laboratories. A Marina close to the Polytechnic houses our seamanship training centre. Here, we have our canoes, yachts, training boats and lifeboats. This facility is also used as a Yachting Centre to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst students. The Academy also launched the SMA-SMTC Safety Training Centre (SSSTC), located at the Marina, which provides new and current safety training for personnel working in the offshore oil and gas industry.
For the six consecutive times, SMA won the Lloyds List Award this time round for the Training and Crewing Award in Nov 2007. SMA won the Youth Development Award from 2004 to 2006 and the Best Seafarer Training Institute in 2000 and 2002 (biennial award). Our aim is to provide quality maritime education and training to meet the needs of our students, industry and the nation, and to ensure that such education and training is continually improved and enhanced.
We bring to our campus a wonderful and diverse cohort of students from the region and the world.
