Lesson 36 repair list

1.      turbocharger to be disassembled, blades to be flatted, alignment of shaft and dynamically balancing test to be carried out, then refitted in good order.

2.      3 pcs main bearing upper halves to be opened for examination, bridge gauge value to be measured, lower halves to be turned out for examination, if found damaged to be re-leaded, clearance to be measured by pressing lead wire and readjusted, then bridge gauge value to be measured again.

3.      Donkey boiler water side to be chemically cleaned (with medicament), dirt and deposit to be cleaned out. Fire side to be scraped, brushed and thoroughly cleaned, carbon deposit to be cleaned out. Boiler to be clean with fresh water, all gaskets to be renewed with ship’s stores. 

4.      Main engine valve clearances, injection timing, gas exchange timing and crank web deflection to be measured before undocking.

5.      One end cover of No. 2 provision refrigerator condenser found leaky to be welded or renewed, end cover to be skimmed and painted with two coats of anti- corrosive paint, zinc anodes to be renewed, after repair, system to be air bled and coolant leakage to be checked. Cooling water regulating valve to be repaired, cooling system to be tested to C/E’s satisfaction.

6.      Propeller and crank shaft found dis-aligned, measurement and alignment to be carried out, if necessary, position of intermediate bearing to be readjusted, deviation not allowed to exceeded allowable range.

7.      Water damper in air condition system to be renewed, fan shaft seal if found jam, bearing to be renewed and greased, tension to be readjusted, foundation bolts to be secured, test to be carried out as specification.

8.      No. 2 lube oil separator to be dismantled, vertical shaft gear if wear-out, vertical shaft to be remade as per attached sketch, braking plate found damaged to be renewed, relative height of separator bowl to vertical shaft to be measured and readjusted. Running test to be carried out after assembled, operating electricity to be controlled under rated value.

9.      No. 8 cylinder liner of main engine to be chrome plated and bored as required, cooling water space to be chemically cleaned then pressure tested to 10kgcm2 , inlet and exhaust valves to be ground, piston rings if found seriously worn to be renewed, cylinder crown and liner connecting surface gasket to be heat treated and annealed, then refitted. Through rod to be tightened up to 850kgcm2 with hydraulic tensioner.

10. Main engine turbocharger to be dismantled, cleaned and inspected, turbocharger nozzle ring to be renewed with ship spare. if necessary, seal ring to be renewed with shipyard spare, if possible, rotor to be dynamically balanced, 3 pcs angle valve for flushing to be renewed.

11. deviation between actual rudder angle and indicating readings if exceeding 2o, hydraulic system, hunting gear and feedback system to be inspected, reasons of failure to be found out and corrected. Relief valve if found leaky to be overhauled, if possible, to be renewed with shop spare. Open pressure of relief valve to be readjusted in presence of surveyor. Steering gear to be checked after repair.

12. two sets of tiltable disc ( swash plate) axial plunger variable displacement pump to be dismantled for inspection. Wear-out of plunger and cylinder to be inspected, connecting condition between control lever and swash plate to be checked, 2pcs bearing to be renewed. Coupling of pump and motor to be overhauled. No.2 steering gear motor foundation bolts to be readjusted and tightened.

13. main engine fuel oil system to be checked and repaired, pressure on pipes of air, lube oil, fuel oil or cooling water system to be released. If necessary, fuel oil filter to be renewed. Chocked or cracked fuel oil pipe to be cleaned or renewed. Damage and worn condition of  Transfer pump to be checked, if necessary, to be renewed. Correct connection of governor to be assured.

14. When installing the main engine pipe system, be sure all clamps,  protecting wrap and insulation layer to be installed correctly, protecting against vibration, rubbing against other parts and over temperature during operation. In order not to spill fuel oil on high temperature exhaust parts, insulation layer to be fitted correctly. When starting to rotate, the pressure produced by fuel oil transfer pump must be over 20kPa. Fuel oil filter to be renewed if found pressure lower than 20kPa. Air in fuel oil system to be inspected, fuel oil bypass valve and transfer pump to be checked for normal operation if found fuel oil pressure still low.

15.     Governor transmission found roughly to be opened. Badly worn spline and excess gear clearance may cause governor transmission roughly. Parts to be checked and replaced as per practical situation. Governor may be misaligned with transmission mechanism, governor to be loosened and correct the alignment if necessary. Oil level to be checked, relief valve of oil pump to be replaced if found seated badly. Parts of oil pump to be replaced if found badly worn. Non-return valve and valve seat of oil pump to be checked, replaced if necessary. Governor’s pump to be inspected and repaired if necessary. Governor to be filled with clean oil of suitable grade, air in governor’s oil pipe to be vented.
