Two fishermen died when their fishing boat ran into a collision with a cargo ship dubbed Sagar Yuvaraj, roughly 20 nm to the northwest of Edakkazhiyoor beach in Thrissur, in the early hours of May 13.

One of the victims has been identified as Gafoor, aged 47. He is the son of Sidiq and hailed from Ponnani.

The other victim has been identified as Salam, aged 45, the son of Muhammed Kutty, a native of Azhikkal in Ponnani.

Four other individuals who were on the fishing boat suffered injuries.

The injured are Badisha, 40, the son of Hasainar; Ayoob, 43, the son of Ali; Majeed, 43, the son of Sidiq; and Mansoor, 36, the son of Kabeer. All of them hail from Ponnani.

After the collision, the fishing boat reportedly broke into two and eventually sank into the sea.

The four survivors were safely rescued by a joint operation led by the ship’s crew members, coastal people, and some fisherfolk from Thrissur and Ponnani.

Later on, the team successfully fished out the bodies of Salam and Gafoor.

The injured were moved to the shore with the help of coastal police and rescue boats that belonged to the ship.

They were taken to a private hospital based in Chavakkad.

The bodies were taken to the Ponnani Government Taluk Hospital.

In the meantime, Munakkakadavu coastal police filed a case against the ship’s captain for careless navigation, resulting in a collision and two deaths.

The police mentioned that the crash led to the boat’s destruction IND KL 06 M M 4118.

Further, IPC sections 280, 304-A, and 337 have been invoked against the ship’s captain.
