(C-Captain O-Customs Officer)
O:How do you do,Mr Customs Officer. It's pleasure to meet you. I'm from the Customs.
C:How do you do,Mr Customs officer. The pleasure is really mine. Welcome to our ship. Shall we rest for a while in the saloon? How about a cigarette?
O:No,thanks. I'm now trying to cuit smoking. I was once a heave smoker.
C:That sounds good. It's true that smoking does no good to our health. How about a cup of tea?
O: Yes,thank you,Mr. Captain. Have you got all the customs paper prepared?
C:Yes. What documents shall I produce?
O:Show me your list of store and provisions, list of crew's personal articles, cargo manifest ,captain's declaration and the last port clearance.
C:Here you are. All the documents are in this file.
O:All right. How many tons of cargo do you carry on board? Are they all to be discharged at this port?
C:We've got 8,420 tons of cargo in all. About two-third are to be discharged here and the rest at Rotterdam.
O:Does your cargo tally exactly with the manifest?
C:Yes,exactly.
O:Have you any firearms on board?
C:Yes,we have some. They are only for self-defence. Here is the duplicate copy of the declaration for the firearms.
O:OK. But according to the customs regulations of our port, you should keep them locked on board during your stay here. Remember not to carry them ashore or you'll be punished for breaking the law.
C:Yes, I know. This is our first call at this port and we are not very clear about the regulations。 Any other restriction?
O:Yes,no crew are allowed to take cameras ashore and no alchohol or cigarettes either. Besides, smuggled goods are not permitted to be brought on board.
C:I see. Are you going to rummage the ship?
O:No,I don't think it is necessary to conduct a search right now. Mr Captain, have you taken out the cigarettes for personal use while the ship is in port?
C:Yes,we have. What shall we do with the remaining part?
O:Keep them in the main bonded store. If you use up the quota, you may ask the agent to call in a customs officer. He will unseal it at your request.
C:I will. Will you please give me a copy of the regulation of this port?
O:No problem. I'll give you one copy tomorrow. Mr Captain, let's go round your ship now, shall we?
C:Of course. This way,please.
