Summary of Required Deck Logbook Entries (at Sea)
Every Watch at Sea
- All entries as per column headings
- Comment on weather and sea conditions in text, also ship's status e.g. 'Rolling heavily', etc'-
- Any incidence of spray or seas on deck
- Any adjustments of speed (rpm) with reason for same
- Any adjustments of course at waypoints (not necessary to log minor adjustments for set/drift)
- Bearing and distance off significant navigational marks (usually beam bearings or at waypoints)
- Compass observations, in the relevant column, or indicate why no obs are possible.
- Night time security patrols (00-04 and 04-08 watches, upon receipt of report from last duty OOW)
- OOW and rating to sign the logbook for watch hours
Daily at Sea
- Noon position, passage and fuel data.
- Daily tests of equipment conducted (steering, whistles, E.R. telephone, general alarm, Off Course alms.)
- Implementation of 'E1' engine room watch mode (every evening when patrol alarm is set)
- Soot blowing (At the time of blowing)
Weekly
- Lifeboat and Fire Drills
- Ballast Soundings/Condition (at the time of changes, or once weekly if no change)
- Master's Inspections of Crew Accommodation and Storerooms
Monthly
- General Safety Inspection conclusions
- Periodic Maintenance of LSA and FFA conducted
Quarterly
- Emergency Steering Tests
- Line Throwing Apparatus Training
- Fixed CO2 System Tests
At the time of occurrence
- Adjustment of ship's clocks (at 0100hrs 'old time')
- CABA Tests and Training
- Change of con between Master and OOW
- Starting of additional steering motor
- Stowaway & Contraband searches
- Cargo Hose Tests
- Pipeline Pressure Tests
- Bunker Training for engineers
- Completion of Transfer Safety Checklist prior to bunker transfers.
- Engine Room bilge discharge operations
- Any accidents or injuries sustained, or damage to the vessel.

- Details of cargo, ballast and bunkering operations
- Weather information
- 'Gangway and Moorings tended throughout as necessary'
- Night time security patrols (00-04 and 04-08 watches, upon receipt of report from last duty OOW)
- Anchor bearings ('Frequently checked and position maintained' where appropriate)
- OOW to sign the logbook for watch hours
Daily
- Draft details.
At the time of occurrence
- Completion of Cescop Checklists (Arrival, Departure, etc)
- Port manoeuvers, shifting ship. (Can refer to "Movement Book" for details)
- Drafts and deadweight upon arrival and departure each berth.
- Water salinity upon arrival and departure each berth.
- Maximum bending moment and shear force upon sailing.
- Any inspections, surveys and repairs conducted on board.
- Arrival and departure of port officials, authorities.
- Crew changes
- Change of Command
- Any accidents or injuries sustained, or damage to the vessel.
